Yurts as an Alternative to Lodging

Are you someone…

Who enjoys being in the wilderness and off-the-grid? Are you looking for a unique, inexpensive lodging experience for your next road trip? Consider booking a night or two in a Yurt. Traditionally these portable, round tents were used by nomads traveling through deserts and wooded areas who might need to relocate at a moment’s notice. Made from pieces of wood and covered with animal skins or felt, they were easy to put up and take down as needed. Modern yurts tend to be more permanent structures that are built on wooden platforms with steel and wooden frames that have been covered in heavy canvas or even Plexiglas. In recent years, these structures have become popular as an inexpensive lodging option throughout the United States. Here are a few spots for you and your family to explore.

Cedar House Inn & Yurts: Dahlonega, Georgia

This award-winning bed and breakfast is located in the heart of North Georgia Wine County. Just 70 minutes north of Atlanta, this spot is popular amongst outdoor enthusiasts, artists, students, and travelers who are looking for nice, budget friendly lodging. The owners of the property are committed to giving back to the environment and have planted over 300 trees and shrubs around the grounds. A vegetarian breakfast is served each morning and a vegan option is available with notice. For those who are seeking an outdoor adventure, there are two yurts available for rental on a first come basis.

The Light Center’s Pacific Yurt: Baldwin City, Kansas

The Light Center is a not-for-profit corporation that provides a sacred space for growing healthier foods, growing spiritually, and promoting family togetherness. For the last 20 years, the organization has been presenting retreats and has worked to create a location for couples, families and individuals to connect with each other and with nature. They seek to provide all of the comforts of home in their private camping grounds. The Center offers retreats in Healing Touch Meditation, Art and Permaculture, and small ground retreats and events.

Fully-furnished Yurt: Ridgway, Colorado

This private Yurt is located on the CC CLUE Ranch in Pleasant Valley. Fully furnished with a four-poster bed, living room with a leather sofa and recliner, and a full kitchenette, this is the perfect spot for those interested in a unique “Glamping” experience. While staying in the Yurt, guests are invited to visit the ranch and are allowed to interact with the animals. They are also invited to dine with the owners in the main house for their meals or, if they chose, have meals brought to them.
